Managers look up to consultants to help them to generate counterintuitive insights that will enable the drive for business growth.

Business leaders want to know how to solve critical business problems quickly. Their appetite for integrative solutions leaves room for consultants who are not constrained by local boundary conditions but willing to pursue the application of global insights.

The challenge for both business leaders and consultants is to "identify some new category of problem, activity, or situation and then to show how the new categorization enables different approaches that ultimately lead to better performance".

For example:

• The power of buyers should be analysed differently from the power of suppliers.
• Competitors that provide complementary products/services should be differentiated from competitors that provide substitutes.
• Business threats can arise from pioneer innovator as well as imitators.

Sometimes managers need to apply rigorous analysis to business problems and to derive prescriptive solutions.

A counterintuitive approach shows that it may not be not enough for managers to show that a key performance indicator (KPI) is a performance measure. They also need to appreciate that that the standard approaches to improve KPIs could lead to worse performance measures.

Managers with a focus on improving performance measures should stop trying to apply the most advanced techniques of improving KPIs to their performance measures. Even though KPIs may initially look like performance measures, they actually have different goals and frameworks. Although KPIs may be an excellent reporting tool, performance measures are better in driving strategy execution.
